1. Introduction

There are two ways to install DaisyMaths 4 on your computer:

If you are confident you know what you are doing, then jump right in at Quick Start!.

Before you install DaisyMaths 4, you should make sure you have a recent version of Java installed. See Section 3 for details.

If you choose to use Java Web Start, downloading and installing DaisyMaths 4 is simply a matter of clicking on a single web link. Plus DaisyMaths 4 installed with Java Web Start will keep itself up to date by checking for a new release each time it is run while your computer is connected to the Internet. See Section 4 for how to install and run using Java Web Start.

If you prefer to install DaisyMaths 4 the conventional way, go to Section 5 to download the Installer for your computer (Windows, Mac OSX or Linux).

3. Installing Java

DaisyMaths 4 is a Java program and requires that a recent Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is installed on your computer.

To download Java or to check that you have the latest version installed click on the "Java - Get It Now" button below.

Get Java

When you reach www.java.com click on the "Get It Now" button at the top-right of the page. If you see a message that says "Java Software Installed" you are ready to go! Otherwise follow the instructions to download the recommended Java Runtime Environment to your computer. This will include Java Web Start.

4. DaisyMaths 4 using Java Web Start

Java Web Start is a simple way of installing applications over the Internet via your web browser. The advantages of Java Web Start are:

The main disadvantage is that you have to do a fresh download of DaisyMaths 4 to every computer you want to install the program to by clicking on the web link in your browser. If you want to install to more than one computer, download the standalone installer. See Section 5. for details.

4.i. Downloading DaisyMaths 4 onto your computer

Step 1:

After you have installed Java, as described in Section 3., please click here to run the latest DaisyMaths 4.

The Java Web Start installation of DaisyMaths 4 is approximately 1.6 MB. A download progress window will appear:

Java Web Start Download Window

Step 2:

When the download is complete, and the program is ready to run, you will see the following window:

Java Web Start Security Window

It is safe to press "Start" which will run the program for the first time. DaisyMaths 4 will not make any changes to your computer. See the FAQ for an explanation of what this means.

4.ii. Running DaisyMaths 4 with Java Web Start

At the end of Section 4.i. DaisyMaths 4 will run for the first time. The next time you want to run DaisyMaths 4, start the "Java Web Start Application Manager".

Once the Java Web Start Application Manager has started, from the menu bar select "View->Downloaded Applications", if it is not already selected. The Java Web Start Application Manager should look like the following picture.

Java Web Start Application Manager

Double-click on "DaisyMaths 4" or select it and press the Application Manager's "Start >" button. DaisyMaths 4 will now start.

The first time you run DaisyMaths 4 from the Java Web Start Application Manager, you will be given the option of putting a DaisyMaths 4 icon on the desktop and, if you are running on Windows, in the Windows "Start" menu. If you do, you will be able to start DaisyMaths 4 directly, without needing to run the Java Web Start Application Manager.

Note for Mac OSX Users: If you encounter problems when starting DaisyMaths 4 from the desktop icon, use the Java Web Start Application Manager to start the program instead. If you continue to have problems, contact us at comments@daisymaths.com.au.

4.iii. Removing DaisyMaths 4 from your computer

These instructions apply to removing DaisyMaths 4 that has been installed using Java Web Start. If you have installed using a standalone Installer for Windows, Mac OSX or Linux, see Section 5.v for instructions on removing DaisyMaths 4.

To remove DaisyMaths 4 from your computer, start the Java Web Start Application Manager, as described in Section 4.ii of the installation instructions. Select "DaisyMaths 4" then from the menu bar select "Application->Remove Application".

5. DaisyMaths 4 using Installer

If you have trouble with Java Web Start, want to install DaisyMaths 4 to more than one computer, or just prefer installing programs the good old-fashioned way, then download the DaisyMaths 4 Installer program.

DaisyMaths 4 is absolutely free so you can run this Installer on as many computers as you like, burn it to CD-R, give it to friends or family. This way you only need to download DaisyMaths 4 once.

The disadvantage of the Installer is that it is slightly larger than the Java Web Start download and it will not update itself. When an updated version of DaisyMaths is released, you will have to download a new Installer, uninstall the old DaisyMaths 4 and run the new Installer.

5.iii. Installing DaisyMaths 4 on Mac OSX

Step 1:

The downloaded zip file, dm4inst_mac.zip, should have expanded to leave the Installer app, dm4inst on your Desktop. Double-click on dm4inst to run the Installer. Click on the Next button to advance from step to step.

Step 2:

If there is more than one version of Java installed on your computer, you may be prompted to select the version to use when running DaisyMaths 4. If there is only one version of Java available then this step will be skipped.

Step 3:

Choose where you would like to install DaisyMaths 4. By default, the program is installed into the "DaisyMaths 4" folder within your Applications folder.

Step 4:

Choose the Alias you would like to use to start DaisyMaths 4. You can choose to place an Alias in the Dock, on the Desktop, or somewhere else. Or you can choose not to create an Alias, in which case you can start the program by double-clicking on the DaisyMaths 4 icon in the installation folder (as chosen in Step 3).

Step 5:

A summary of the install is displayed. If you are happy with everything, click the Install button. If you want to make a change, click Previous until you get back to the step you want to alter. Click Cancel if you want to abort the installation.
